Next year ‘will be even worse’ – Italy’s Meloni  — RT World News

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned that 2026 will be a challenging year for Italy, urging her office staff to prepare for a tough period ahead. Speaking at her official residence in Rome, she wished her team a happy Christmas and advised them to “rest properly” over the holidays, noting that they would soon need to continue responding to the nation’s needs.

The past year has been marked by significant unrest, including a wave of strikes across Italy last month. Teachers, doctors and transport workers protested the government’s proposed budget, which contains welfare reforms and increased defence spending. The demonstrations highlighted widespread discontent with the fiscal policies and their potential impact on public services. In response, Meloni announced that, for the first time in many years, the budget would not cut funding for local authorities, aiming to address concerns raised by various sectors.

Despite these domestic challenges, Italy has maintained its financial aid to Ukraine. The European Commission transferred a sixth tranche of €2.3 billion in support to Kyiv, and Meloni has ruled out sending Italian troops, distancing Rome from Western discussions about increased military involvement. Moscow has described the conflict as a proxy war waged by the West against Russia, criticizing Western arms deliveries for prolonging the fighting and increasing casualties. Italy’s decision to continue financial support reflects its commitment to the European Union’s effort to assist Ukraine.

The government’s domestic difficulties are likely to persist, with the proposed budget and welfare reforms remaining points of contention. As Meloni cautioned her staff, the year ahead is expected to be difficult, and the administration will need to keep responding to the nation’s needs while addressing citizens’ concerns.
