Nigeria edges Tanzania 2-1 in AFCON opener

Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tanzania’s Taifa Stars in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. The win, however, was not as convincing as expected, given Nigeria’s status as tournament favorites. Despite dominating possession, the team struggled to assert their authority, allowing Tanzania to grow in confidence and create scoring opportunities.

Nigeria’s attacking display was characterized by a lack of precision, with only half of their attempts hitting the target. The team’s inability to suffocate the game after taking the lead was a concern, as better teams may capitalize on such generosity. The narrow 4-4-2 diamond formation, preferred by coach Eric Chelle, has been a subject of debate, and against Tanzania, it failed to maximize Nigeria’s strengths.

Star striker Victor Osimhen had an uncharacteristically wasteful night, missing chances and scuffing finishes under little pressure. In contrast, Semi Ajayi impressed with his leadership at the back, filling the void left by William Troost-Ekong. Ajayi’s performance, which included opening the scoring and dominating aerially, was a timely statement.

Alex Iwobi’s creative influence was pivotal, as he dictated Nigeria’s tempo and provided the decisive passes for both goals. Operating from a deeper position, Iwobi’s rhythm and intelligence could be crucial to Nigeria’s success in the tournament. Despite the win, Nigeria’s performance exposed areas that need to be improved quickly, as the AFCON rarely allows teams to gradually find form.

The Super Eagles have secured their three points, but the real challenge now is to turn survival into dominance. With the tournament’s competitive nature, Nigeria must sharpen their edges to progress. The team’s next match will be a test of their ability to address their weaknesses and assert their authority on the pitch. As the competition heats up, Nigeria’s fans will be watching closely to see if their team can rise to the challenge and make a deep run in the tournament.
