The Labour Party has criticized Nigeria’s ruling class for lacking empathy and selflessness, stating that the country’s struggles will persist unless leaders prioritize the welfare of ordinary citizens over personal gain. In a Christmas message, Labour Party Chairman Julius Abure expressed concerns that the nation’s resources are being cornered by a select few, which could have been utilized to develop critical infrastructure, improve schools, hospitals, and social services.
Abure emphasized that Nigeria’s founding fathers, including Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, demonstrated sacrificial spirit and selflessness, qualities he believes are absent in contemporary leadership. He warned that the country will continue to face difficulties until current leaders adopt these attributes.
The Labour Party chairman drew parallels with the life of Jesus Christ, who chose a path of humility and sacrifice, and noted that these qualities are largely absent in Nigeria’s ruling class. Abure argued that meaningful progress can only be achieved when leaders demonstrate empathy for the masses through selflessness, which would curb the accumulation of wealth by a few individuals at the expense of the public good.
In light of widespread concerns over corruption, Abure called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action to rid the country of graft, urging him to utilize the symbol of his party, the broom, to sweep corruption out of Nigeria. He emphasized that no government can endure without confronting corruption head-on, citing Christ as an example of incorruptible leadership.
Abure also urged Nigerians to pray for improved security across the country, commending security agencies for their efforts. He praised the gallantry of service men, the State Security Services, and paramilitary groups for maintaining peace during the season, and emphasized the need for the military to be adequately motivated to sustain its operations.
The Labour Party’s statement highlights the need for Nigeria’s leaders to prioritize the welfare of citizens and tackle corruption to ensure the country’s progress. As the nation continues to grapple with various challenges, the call for selflessness and empathy from leaders is seen as crucial in addressing the country’s struggles and promoting meaningful development.
