Obaship Crisis: Epe Residents Appeal to Lagos State Government

The Lagos State Government is facing increasing pressure to intervene in the prolonged Obaship succession crisis in Epe, a historic town in the state. Seven months after the death of Olu of Epe, Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale, the community remains without a traditional ruler due to disputes between two leading contenders. The monarch’s passing in May 2025 was expected to trigger a smooth transition, but conflicting claims from rival camps have stalled the process, creating tension among supporters and unease within the community.

Despite mediation efforts by elders and prominent figures, no lasting resolution has been reached, and frustration, particularly among youths, has grown. The situation came to a head during the last Eid-el-Kabir celebration, when security concerns led to the suspension of Eid prayers at the designated praying ground. Although the Lagos State Government later reversed the suspension and assured residents of adequate security, urging all parties to maintain peace, residents say that no tangible steps have been taken to break the deadlock since then.

The absence of a traditional ruler has disrupted important cultural, social, and communal activities in Epe, which community members describe as abnormal and contrary to the town’s age-long traditions and identity. Youth groups and religious bodies have submitted formal petitions to the state government, calling for swift intervention and warning that further delay could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

Recently, a delegation of youths visited the residence of the Baamofin of Epe Kingdom, Chief Tunde Seriki, to register their grievances and seek his assistance in engaging the state authorities. Seriki appealed for calm and restraint, expressing confidence in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s ability to listen to all sides and act in the interest of justice. The President of the Epe Ogunmodede Club, Alhaji Omodele Ibrahim, also urged the state government to act decisively, noting that youths are becoming increasingly restless and residents are deeply unhappy with the prolonged uncertainty.

The Lagos State Government is seen as the only authority with the capacity and moral standing to mediate effectively and deliver an outcome that will be widely accepted as fair, transparent, and just. With the situation in Epe continuing to pose a threat to peace and stability, the state government’s intervention is crucial to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy to the community.
