A high-ranking official of the All Progressives Congress, Victor Giadom, has emphasized the crucial role of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in determining electoral outcomes in Rivers State. According to Giadom, who serves as the National Vice Chairman for the South-South region, Governor Sim Fubara cannot achieve electoral success in the state without Wike’s support.
Giadom highlighted Wike’s significant influence in Gokana politics, describing him as a “dependable leader” in Rivers State. He asserted that Wike’s dominance in the area is unchallenged and essential for any political success. Giadom guaranteed that the people of Gokana are loyal to Wike and President Bola Tinubu, stating that the area is a “no go” zone for anyone, including Governor Fubara, who would need Wike’s backing to win any election.
Former Senator Magnus Abe also expressed the people of Gokana’s loyalty to Wike and President Tinubu, advising the president that his support in the area is assured and therefore does not require a campaign visit. These comments come amidst renewed political tension between Wike and Fubara over control of Rivers State’s political structure.
On Monday, Wike rejected Fubara’s claim of being the leader of the APC in Rivers State, warning that sudden support for President Tinubu does not guarantee a party ticket in the 2027 elections. This development highlights the ongoing power struggle within the APC in Rivers State, with Wike’s influence remaining a significant factor in the state’s politics.
The situation in Rivers State is a reflection of the complex political landscape in Nigeria, where regional leaders and alliances play a crucial role in shaping electoral outcomes. As the country prepares for future elections, the dynamics between Wike, Fubara, and other key players in Rivers State will be closely watched. The outcome of this power struggle will likely have significant implications for the state’s political structure and the APC’s prospects in the region.
