Gombe State Establishes Electricity Regulatory Commission

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya

The Gombe State government has established two new commissions, the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Gombe State Information Technology and Digital Economy Commission, to oversee the state’s electricity and digital economy sectors. Governor Inuwa Yahaya has appointed Dr. Usman Abba Arabi, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, as chairman of the electricity regulatory commission, and Dr. Al-Amin Umar Barambu as chairman of the digital economy commission.

The creation of these commissions aims to strengthen regulation, promote innovation, and accelerate economic transformation in the state. The Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission will focus on harnessing opportunities under the Electricity Act to improve service delivery, attract private sector investment, and expand access to reliable electricity. The Gombe State Information Technology and Digital Economy Commission will work towards building a technology-driven and digitally competitive economy, with a focus on ICT development, digital innovation, skills acquisition, e-governance, and youth employment.

The appointments were announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, following the governor’s assent to the bills establishing the two commissions. Governor Yahaya stated that the appointees possess the necessary experience and expertise to drive the mandates of the newly created commissions. He urged the newly appointed chairmen to apply professionalism, integrity, and dedication in building strong, responsive, and results-oriented institutions that will deliver tangible benefits to the people of Gombe State.

The establishment of these commissions is part of the state government’s efforts to reform the power sector and promote economic development. The governor’s administration has identified the need to improve access to reliable electricity and develop the digital economy as key priorities. The new commissions are expected to play a crucial role in achieving these goals and driving economic growth in the state.

The appointments of the chairmen will take effect from January 2, 2026. With the establishment of these commissions, the Gombe State government is taking a significant step towards creating a more regulated and competitive electricity and digital economy sector, which is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy and the lives of its citizens.
