SAPS Warns of Drink Spiking Syndicates Targeting Men and Women on New Year’s Eve

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a warning to the public to exercise extreme caution when visiting entertainment venues during the New Year’s Eve celebrations. A notable increase in robbery cases, primarily targeting men, has been reported in various parts of the country, including Gauteng and the North West. According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, these incidents often involve men being robbed or, in some cases, killed after leaving drinking establishments with women they had met.

The modus operandi of these syndicates involves using young women to target men in clubs, taverns, and other alcohol-serving establishments. The women, who are being monitored by the syndicate, would approach potential victims, gain their trust, and then spike their drinks. Once the victim is incapacitated, the syndicate would rob them of their valuables, including cars, cellphones, and money. In some instances, the victims have died due to an overdose of the substance used to spike their drinks.

The SAPS has urged men to be vigilant and avoid leaving drinking establishments with strangers. Women are also warned not to involve themselves in these criminal activities, as it can lead to arrest. Furthermore, the police have reported cases of women being victims of spiked drinks, resulting in rape, assault, or even death. These incidents have occurred when women have been picked up by strangers or have left with acquaintances from drinking outlets.

To stay safe, the SAPS has issued guidelines for both men and women. These include going out with known friends, sharing plans with trusted individuals, and being mindful of drink safety. The police also advise against drinking and driving, and recommend planning for proper transportation to and from leisure venues.

The SAPS has emphasized that spiking drinks is a serious crime with severe physical and psychological consequences, regardless of the victim’s gender. As the country celebrates the start of a new year, the police are urging everyone to be extra vigilant, avoid carrying large amounts of money, and be alert at all times. Law enforcement agencies will be on the ground to ensure public safety during this period. By taking necessary precautions and being aware of their surroundings, the public can help prevent these crimes and enjoy a safe and festive holiday season.
