The Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area in Ogun State, Nigeria, has launched an expanded immunisation programme aimed at protecting children against vaccine-preventable diseases, including Measles, Rubella, and the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). According to Dr. Augustine Bankole, the local government health educator, the programme is a collaborative effort between the World Health Organization (WHO), federal, state, and local governments to strengthen community immunity.
The initiative prioritises the Measles-Rubella vaccination, which will be administered to children between nine months and 14 years, while routine immunisation will be provided to children aged 0-23 months. Additionally, the HPV vaccine will be given to nine-year-old girls to prevent cervical cancer. The vaccination exercise is scheduled to take place from January 20 to 31, with possible extensions for mop-up activities. The programme aims to target approximately three million children in the state.
Dr. Bankole emphasized the importance of timely vaccination in safeguarding children’s health, noting that the vaccines are safe, effective, and approved. He reassured parents and caregivers that the vaccines would be closely monitored and administered at various Primary Health Centres across the local government. The Medical Officer, Dr. Jelili Bakare, urged stakeholders to work collaboratively to ensure the success of the vaccination campaign.
The Community Development Association (CDA) has pledged its support for the initiative, with its representative, Kayode Idowu-Ojumo, commending the effort and promising to mobilise residents to benefit from the programme. The Local Council Development Area (LCDA) plans to create awareness and provide enlightenment to encourage more residents to participate.
The launch of this expanded immunisation programme is a significant step towards improving public health in Ogun State. With the support of stakeholders and the community, the programme aims to reduce the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases and promote a healthier population. As the vaccination exercise commences, it is essential for parents, caregivers, and residents to take advantage of this initiative and ensure that their children are protected against these preventable diseases.
