Nigeria YPP demands accountability ahead of new tax regime

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and demand accountability from the government ahead of the new tax regime set to commence in 2026. In a statement, the party extended New Year greetings to Nigerians and encouraged citizens not to lose faith in the country’s potential, despite the challenges and difficulties faced.

According to the YPP, democracy relies on citizens holding leaders accountable, and Nigerians must begin to ask critical questions and scrutinize public spending, particularly with the introduction of the new tax law. The party warned that increased revenue without transparency, accountability, and prudence would only deepen public mistrust and hardship.

The YPP also called on citizens to mobilize and participate in the 2027 elections, emphasizing the importance of active participation in reclaiming power and voting out incompetent leadership. Furthermore, the party warned against the misuse of anti-corruption agencies against political opponents, stressing that the fight against corruption must be sincere and impartial.

In addition, the YPP demanded an urgent forensic audit of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to investigate the reported unaccounted $40 billion. The party stated that this amount, equivalent to Nigeria’s foreign reserves, must be treated with urgency and transparency.

On the new tax law, the YPP emphasized that Nigeria’s challenge lies not in revenue generation but in the reckless expenditure of public funds. The party argued that Nigerians are not opposed to paying taxes but are concerned about the lack of transparency and discipline in managing public funds.

The YPP commended the government’s renewed commitment to tackling insecurity and acknowledged the recent international efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges. The party also called on the National Assembly to ensure the speedy passage of a credible and people-oriented electoral framework.

Ultimately, the YPP’s statement highlights the need for transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance. As Nigeria prepares for the new tax regime and the 2027 elections, the party’s call for vigilance and accountability serves as a reminder of the importance of active citizenship in shaping the country’s future.
