Rabiu Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, has warned members of the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano State that betraying the movement will lead to political failure. He issued the warning amid rumors that Kano Governor Abba Yusuf may defect to the All Progressives Congress. In a video message, Kwankwaso cited historical examples of individuals who lost their political influence after leaving Kwankwasiyya since 1999. He urged members to remain loyal, noting that some former members enjoyed brief periods of success after departing the group, only to eventually lose their influence.
Kwankwaso observed that certain individuals in Kano held power for nearly a decade before becoming politically irrelevant. He advised members to learn from past examples rather than repeat the same mistakes, emphasizing that personal experience can be a costly teacher. “Nobody in this country or elsewhere has ever succeeded with betrayal,” he said, encouraging members to counsel anyone considering defecting to the opposition that betrayal does not bring success.
The warning is significant given the speculation surrounding Governor Abba Yusuf’s potential defection to the APC. The Kwankwasiyya movement has been a dominant political force in Kano State, and Kwankwaso’s statement serves as a reminder of its influence and the potential consequences of betraying it. As Kano’s political landscape continues to evolve, his warning is likely to have substantial implications for the state’s political players.
