Nurses threaten strike over unpaid promotions in Kaduna

Nurses in Kaduna State have issued a warning of a potential statewide strike due to the persistent failure of authorities to conduct promotion exercises. The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) Kaduna State Council expressed frustration over the deliberate neglect of nurses’ career progression by the Ministry of Health and its parastatals.

According to Comrade Nurse Ishaku Yakubu, Chairman of the NANNM Kaduna State Council, the non-conduct of promotion exercises has negatively affected morale and productivity within the health system. Yakubu stated that the union will no longer tolerate delays that undermine the dignity and professional growth of nurses. The union has resolved to escalate its response if the matter is not addressed, with plans to declare an industrial dispute with the state Ministry of Health and its parastatals that refuse to conduct promotion exercises as scheduled.

The promotion dispute comes amid an ongoing industrial action at the National Ear Care Centre, Kaduna, where nurses are on strike over issues relating to professional designation and salary placement. The strike, now in its second week, has recorded full compliance, with Yakubu warning that failure by authorities to act swiftly could lead to a broader shutdown of health facilities across the state.

The NANNM chairman acknowledged achievements recorded in 2025, including the approval and implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) 2024, which improved nurses’ welfare. However, Yakubu stressed that salary gains alone are not enough, as promotions are a statutory right and a critical component of professional motivation. He accused some institutions of attempting to undermine the nursing profession and relegate nurses to subservient roles.

The potential strike highlights the ongoing challenges faced by nurses in Kaduna State, who are seeking fair treatment and opportunities for career advancement. With the union prepared to take further action, the situation may escalate into a broader industrial dispute, potentially affecting healthcare services across the state. The NANNM’s warning serves as a call to action for authorities to address the concerns of nurses and ensure that their professional growth and development are prioritized.
