APC Regains Footing in Abia State Ahead of 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is experiencing a resurgence in Abia State, according to the APC South-East Mandate Forum. In a statement released in Umuahia, the Forum noted that political engagement across communities in Abia has started to alter the state’s political landscape, despite being governed by the Labour Party.

The APC South East Mandate Forum attributed the party’s growing influence to the leadership of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who has triggered a wave of defections from the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Thousands of grassroots supporters have reportedly defected to the APC, tearing their previous party cards in the process.

The Forum alleged that the scale of the defections reflects the growing public dissatisfaction with the governing Labour Party in Abia and the renewed confidence in the APC as a credible alternative. The coordinator of the APC South East Mandate Forum, Chief Onyebuchi Okorie, stated that the defections are a testament to the APC’s direction, leadership, and seriousness of purpose.

The movement is described as a people-driven process, with ordinary citizens feeling reconnected to a party that understands their everyday realities. The confidence level of party members has increased, and more people are joining the party. The Forum noted that people are joining the APC in Abia not just because they are dissatisfied with other parties, but because they believe they will have a voice, relevance, and protection within the party.

The political movement unfolding in Abia is seen as an early indicator of a broader shift ahead of the 2027 elections. The APC is steadily regaining its footing in Abia State, with the foundations being laid today expected to matter as the state moves closer to the 2027 elections. At the centre of this reawakening is a leader who understands that political victory begins from the grassroots. The development is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape of Abia State and the upcoming elections.
