Lagos clears illegal structures on Badagry Expressway

The Lagos State Government has launched a coordinated enforcement operation along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, targeting the removal of illegal structures and alleviating traffic congestion on the busy route. According to the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the exercise commenced at Alakija in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area and has progressed through Iyana Iba, with ongoing activities opposite Lagos State University (LASU) and around Alaba Market in Ojo Local Government Area.

Operatives from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Agency (LAGESA), in collaboration with other enforcement units under the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, are leading the operation. The commissioner explained that the exercise is part of the state government’s efforts to enhance environmental hygiene, restore order to public spaces, and ensure the smooth movement of vehicles along the expressway, in line with established environmental and urban planning regulations.

The Lagos-Badagry Expressway is a critical transportation artery, connecting Lagos to neighboring states and countries, and its congestion has been a long-standing concern for residents and commuters. The state government’s initiative aims to address this issue by removing illegal structures, such as street stalls and unapproved buildings, that contribute to the congestion and safety hazards.

The enforcement operation is also expected to improve the aesthetic appeal of the expressway, as the removal of illegal structures will help to restore the area’s environmental beauty and promote a more organized and planned urban environment. The Lagos State Government has emphasized its commitment to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment, and this exercise is a significant step towards achieving this goal.

As the operation continues, residents and commuters can expect to see significant improvements in traffic flow and environmental conditions along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The state government’s efforts to address the challenges facing the expressway demonstrate its dedication to providing a safe and conducive environment for its citizens, and its commitment to sustainable urban development. With the ongoing enforcement operation, the Lagos State Government is taking a crucial step towards creating a more livable and sustainable city.
