The Bauchi State government has appointed 142 new district heads across 20 emirates and one chiefdom, aiming to enhance traditional leadership and grassroots administration. This move is part of the state’s efforts to strengthen its traditional institutions and improve governance at the local level.
According to Abubakar Muhammad Wabi, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, the appointments were made in accordance with the Bauchi State Chieftaincy (Appointment and Deposition) Law 2025. This law provides a framework for the restructuring and recognition of traditional institutions in the state. Wabi announced the appointments during a press briefing in Bauchi, stating that all appointees have received their letters and can begin work immediately.
The creation of 20 Emirate Councils and Chiefdoms under the new law necessitated the appointment of qualified district heads to manage community affairs effectively. The Bauchi State government believes that this move will improve cooperation between traditional rulers and government authorities, particularly at the grassroots level. Wabi emphasized that the appointments will facilitate better coordination between the government and traditional institutions, ultimately contributing to more effective governance.
The commission chairman commended Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for his support in reforming the traditional system and expressed gratitude to other stakeholders for their cooperation. He advised the new district heads to serve their communities with fairness and accountability, stressing the state government’s commitment to peace, unity, and sustainable development.
The appointment of new district heads is a significant step towards enhancing traditional governance in Bauchi State. With the new law in place, the state government aims to ensure that traditional institutions are equipped to play a more effective role in promoting community development and social cohesion. As the new district heads assume their roles, they will be expected to work closely with government authorities to address the needs of their communities and promote the overall well-being of the state.
