Jonathan Backs PDP Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed his confidence in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as “alive, strong, and resilient” despite media speculation about its decline. Jonathan made the remarks while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) at his private office in Abuja. The meeting, which took place on January 6, 2026, focused on reconciliation within the party and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The PDP, according to Jonathan, remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy and the only surviving original political party since 1998. He emphasized the party’s historical resilience and institutional strength, describing it as a national institution that has contributed significantly to the country’s democracy since 1999. Jonathan, who has benefited from the party, serving in various capacities including as President, reiterated his commitment to its growth.

The former president urged the party leadership to prioritize national interest and institutional development over personal considerations, stressing the importance of strong political parties in ensuring democratic stability. He also encouraged the party to engage with aggrieved members to promote unity, which he believes is essential for a balanced and prosperous Nigeria.

The NWC delegation, led by National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, briefed Jonathan on the party’s “Rebirth Agenda,” a comprehensive plan aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the PDP. Turaki expressed gratitude for Jonathan’s guidance and loyalty, assuring him that the party is committed to returning power to the people and repositioning itself as the party of the majority of Nigerians.

Other members of the delegation included former Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, and Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, among others. The meeting highlights the PDP’s efforts to reunify and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 elections, with a focus on promoting national interest and democratic stability. As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, the PDP’s ability to adapt and remain a viable force will be crucial in shaping the country’s future.
