The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has reaffirmed Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the party’s leader in the state, citing the party’s constitution. Emeka Bekee, the state’s APC chairman, made this assertion on Arise Television’s Morning Show, amid ongoing political tensions involving Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
According to Bekee, the party’s constitution clearly states that a sitting governor who joins the APC automatically becomes the party’s leader in their state. This position, he emphasized, is not subject to debate. As Governor Fubara has joined the APC, he is now the party’s number one member in Rivers State.
The APC’s leadership structure, Bekee explained, follows a clear hierarchy, with President Bola Tinubu leading the party at the national level and governors who are party members leading the APC in their respective states. He noted that if Minister Wike were to join the APC, he would become a leader in his own capacity as a member, but currently, he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Bekee’s statement comes amid reports of Wike’s involvement in the nomination of local government chairmen in Rivers State, many of whom are not APC members. Bekee downplayed the significance of Wike’s actions, suggesting that he may be thanking those he worked with to produce the local government chairmen.
The APC chairman in Rivers State maintained that Governor Fubara’s position as party leader is uncontested. He emphasized that the governor’s membership in the APC makes him the party’s leader in the state, according to the party’s constitution. The clarification is significant, as it underscores the party’s structure and hierarchy, with the governor playing a key role in leading the APC in Rivers State.
