Yobe State Sets June 6 Election Date

The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission has announced the scheduling of local government elections across the state’s 17 local government areas for June 6, 2026. This development was made public by Mohammed Nguru, Permanent Member I of the Commission, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Damaturu. The meeting, which was attended by representatives of security agencies, political parties, and the press, aimed to inform and engage relevant stakeholders in the electoral process.

According to Nguru, the election timetable has received the approval of Governor Mai Mala Buni, and the elections are intended to strengthen democracy at the grassroots level. He emphasized the importance of cooperation among all stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and the electorate, in ensuring the success of the elections. The Commission is currently finalizing comprehensive election guidelines, which will outline procedures, timelines, and requirements for political parties.

Nguru urged political parties to carefully study the guidelines and comply fully to ensure a smooth electoral process. He also encouraged parties to field strong candidates, highlighting the significance of leadership quality at the local government level. The Commission has set eligibility criteria for candidates, including a minimum age requirement of 30 years for chairmanship candidates and 25 years for councillorship candidates. Candidates must also be of sound mind, not bankrupt, and have a minimum educational qualification of a school certificate or equivalent.

The nomination fees for the elections have been set at N300,000 for chairmanship, N250,000 for vice-chairmanship, and N200,000 for councillorship positions. The Commission has assured the public that the electoral process will be free, fair, credible, and peaceful. Nguru called for the cooperation of all stakeholders and urged eligible citizens to actively participate in the electoral process.

The scheduling of these elections is a significant development in Yobe State’s democratic process, and the Commission’s efforts to ensure a credible and peaceful electoral process are crucial. With the elections slated for June 6, 2026, the state’s residents can expect a busy electoral season, with political parties and candidates engaging in campaigns and other activities. The outcome of these elections will have important implications for local governance and development in Yobe State.
