Wike: A Pragmatist Trapped in Theory?

Nyesom Wike is often viewed as a political pragmatist, yet his recent actions suggest he may be prioritizing theoretical maneuvers over practical political realities.

I define politics as our daily way of life, requiring a degree of strategic “smartness” to overcome hurdles. It is a practical activity that demands wisdom and caution. However, in my view, the FCT Minister has neglected these fundamental principles. He appears to have played into a “childish game,” fueled by praise from scriptwriters who may have designed the scenario for him to fail.

Many observers foresaw the outcome of Wike’s current trajectory from the very beginning. While I suspect many attempted to advise him, he possesses a level of self-belief that often renders the opinions of others irrelevant to his ambitions. His past treatment of predecessors and other political leaders serves as clear evidence of an “I have arrived” syndrome—a trait often mistaken for mere arrogance.

Wike is undoubtedly a skilled politician who understands how to protect his interests. However, his primary weakness appears to be knowing when to stop or when to concede. This lack of restraint is what distinguishes him from other “smart” politicians like Distinguished Senator Osita Izunaso, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and Bukola Saraki.

It is not too late for Wike to retrace his steps. There is still ample room for him to pivot if he can set aside his pride. As the saying goes, “Pride no help anybody way de cage before.” He remains a figure I admire for his activity and unwavering support when he chooses to commit—but that commitment must now be tempered with humility.
