Tinubu should avoid Rivers State crisis

A public affairs analyst has urged President Bola Tinubu to refrain from intervening in the ongoing crisis in Rivers State. Frank Tietie made this statement during an interview on Arise Television, emphasizing that the president’s involvement may be exacerbating the situation. The crisis in Rivers State escalated on Thursday when the State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, citing a breach of a peace agreement brokered by President Tinubu.

The State Assembly accused Governor Fubara and his deputy of violating the terms of the agreement. In response, Tietie argued that it is “morally, politically, and legally wrong” for President Tinubu to be involved in the crisis, as it appears to be causing more harm than good. He emphasized the importance of allowing the situation to unfold without presidential interference, stating that Nigeria should be a country that operates on principles and precedents.

The analyst’s comments come as the political crisis in Rivers State continues to unfold. The impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara have sparked concerns about the stability of the state’s government. Tietie’s call for President Tinubu to withdraw from the situation highlights the need for the federal government to respect the autonomy of state governments and allow them to resolve their internal conflicts without external interference.

The crisis in Rivers State has significant implications for the country’s democratic system, as it tests the ability of state institutions to function independently and resolve conflicts without federal intervention. As the situation continues to develop, it remains to be seen how President Tinubu will respond to Tietie’s call and whether the federal government will intervene further in the crisis. The outcome of the impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara will also be closely watched, as it may have far-reaching consequences for the state’s political landscape.
