Concerns over absence of fire service in Taraba LGAs emerge as infernos continue to cause havoc

A recent fire outbreak at the Wukari Local Government council secretariat in Taraba State has highlighted concerns over the lack of a functional fire service in the area. The incident, which occurred on Friday, forced residents and bystanders to use buckets of water in an attempt to contain the blaze. According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in nearby bushes before spreading to the secretariat building.

This is not the first time a fire outbreak has occurred in Wukari. A similar incident occurred two years ago at a phone shop opposite the United Bank for Africa (UBA) branch in the town, resulting in the complete destruction of the shop. On both occasions, residents were left to battle the fires using makeshift methods, emphasizing the need for a properly equipped fire service.

The absence of a functional fire service in Wukari has been attributed to the failure of political office holders to provide essential emergency services. Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of attention given to critical infrastructure, despite being represented by elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels. The establishment of a basic fire service would significantly reduce losses during such incidents, as a properly equipped fire station could extinguish fires within minutes, preventing extensive damage to property and public infrastructure.

Council workers have criticized the misplaced priorities of political leaders, alleging that attention is often given to short-term projects rather than critical infrastructure. “Instead of investing in projects that will add value to our local government and the state at large, our elected leaders waste our hard-earned resources on projects that have no meaning to our people,” said a council staff member.

The Chairman of the council, Bala Useni, confirmed the incident, stating that the fire broke out shortly after he left the secretariat for an official engagement. Initial efforts to contain the fire were unsuccessful due to the lack of water, but the inferno was eventually brought under control through the combined efforts of council staff and concerned individuals. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and a committee will be constituted to assess the extent of the damage and determine the cause of the fire.

The incident has disrupted administrative activities and negatively affected service delivery in the local government area. The lack of a functional fire service in Wukari has significant implications for the safety and well-being of residents, highlighting the need for urgent attention to critical infrastructure. As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, residents hope that their elected leaders will take concrete steps to address the shortage of essential emergency services in the area.
