Nigerian Military Holds Prayers for Fallen Heroes

The Nigerian military held a special prayer session at the Giginya Military Barracks in Sokoto on Friday to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day. The solemn ceremony, led by Chief Imam Major Tanimu Hamisu Kauru, brought together officers, soldiers, and other ranks to honor the nation’s fallen heroes.

The prayers, which included Qur’anic recitations and moments of silence, were offered for the repose of service personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as for the safety and strength of troops currently serving in various theatres of operation. Major Kauru emphasized the significance of Armed Forces Remembrance Day, noting that it is a national observance dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of military personnel who died fighting against insurgency, banditry, and other security threats.

The cleric urged serving personnel to remain committed to discipline, professionalism, and national service, adding that the sacrifices of fallen heroes should serve as a reminder of the responsibility placed on members of the Armed Forces. Prayers were also offered for peace and security in the country, with calls for continued public support for the military.

The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the importance of remembering and honoring the nation’s fallen heroes. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an annual event that takes place on January 15, aimed at commemorating the end of the Nigerian Civil War and honoring the sacrifices of military personnel who have died in service.

The event is marked across the country with various activities, including wreath-laying ceremonies, parades, and special prayers. The Nigerian military has been engaged in various operations aimed at combating insecurity and ensuring peace and stability in the country. The special prayer session at the Giginya Military Barracks is part of the military’s efforts to honor the sacrifices of its personnel and seek divine intervention for peace and security in the country.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is also an opportunity for the nation to reflect on the sacrifices of its military personnel and the importance of their role in maintaining national security. As the country continues to grapple with various security challenges, the event serves as a reminder of the need for continued support and solidarity with the military.
