The Niger Command of the Federal Fire Service (FFS) reported a total of 430 fire outbreaks in various locations across the state between January and December 2025. According to the Controller, Assistant Controller Alikali Mohammed, the command promptly responded to all incidents, effectively containing the fires and saving lives and properties worth billions of naira.
Mohammed attributed the success to the collaboration between the FFS and the State Fire Service, which enabled them to respond quickly to emergencies. He noted that the partnership had been instrumental in combating fire outbreaks in the state capital, Minna, and other areas. The command also conducts regular fire safety awareness campaigns, including the annual National Fire Safety Week, where the public is educated on preventive measures and emergency procedures.
Despite these efforts, Mohammed expressed concern over the public’s lack of awareness about fire safety rules and regulations. He cited negligence as a major cause of fire outbreaks, emphasizing the need for the public to take preventive measures and report incidents promptly. The command faces challenges in responding to emergencies due to the lack of awareness about its emergency contact numbers, which hinders its ability to respond quickly.
The Niger Command’s efforts to promote fire safety and prevent disasters are crucial, given the significant number of fire outbreaks in the state. The command’s collaboration with the State Fire Service and its public awareness campaigns demonstrate its commitment to protecting lives and properties. However, the public’s cooperation is essential in preventing fire outbreaks and ensuring effective emergency response. Mohammed urged the public to take fire safety seriously and to contact the command with any useful information that could assist in preventing or responding to emergencies.
The high incidence of fire outbreaks in Niger State highlights the need for increased awareness and education on fire safety. The Federal Fire Service and other stakeholders must continue to work together to promote a culture of fire safety and prevent disasters. By taking proactive measures and responding promptly to emergencies, the command can minimize the risk of fire outbreaks and protect the lives and properties of citizens.
