Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has addressed criticisms surrounding his political decisions, emphasizing that politics is driven by interests, power, and the will of the people, rather than sentiment or emotions. During a visit to his political base in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Wike stated that his entry into politics was a deliberate choice, not an accidental one.
The minister’s visit was a gesture of gratitude to his supporters and political leaders in the area, where he acknowledged the importance of recognizing support as a fundamental principle of leadership. Wike noted that his decision to become a politician was a conscious one, and he should be allowed to play his role without criticism.
In his address, Wike emphasized that politics is about interests and power, stating that “power is not given but taken.” He highlighted the significant voting strength of Obio/Akpor, with over 684,000 votes out of 3.5 million registered voters in Rivers State. This, he said, gives the area the power to dictate who becomes governor in the state.
Wike also expressed his appreciation for the support of President Bola Tinubu, who he believes knows his worth and does not need to be told what to do. The minister stated that Tinubu has done much for the people of Rivers State and that they would reciprocate in the 2027 elections.
Local leaders, including Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Kingsley Chinda and Chairman of the council Dr. Gift Worlu, pledged their support for Wike and Tinubu. Chinda noted that with the voting strength of Obio/Akpor, nobody would challenge the area’s political power in the state. Worlu described Wike as a “gift” to the area, state, and country, due to his outstanding performance in public service.
The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, reassured Wike of the full support of the people in the local government area, adding that members of the State Assembly would continue to pray for him and support his call for Tinubu’s re-election. With the 2027 presidential election approaching, Wike’s visit to Obio/Akpor has reinforced his connection with his political base and highlighted the significance of the area’s voting strength in Rivers State.
