CCTV Control Centre Inaugurated on Third Mainland Bridge

The Nigerian Federal Government has launched a ₦40 billion closed-circuit television (CCTV) control centre to enhance security and monitor activities on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. The project was inaugurated by Minister of Works David Umahi, who emphasized that the initiative aims to curb reckless driving, prevent suicide attempts, and bolster security on the bridge.

The CCTV system, initially announced in 2025, is designed to provide real-time monitoring of the bridge and its surroundings. Security personnel will utilize the control centre to enforce speed limits and respond promptly to incidents. The project is part of the extensive rehabilitation works carried out on the bridge since the current administration took office in 2023. According to Umahi, the bridge required comprehensive repairs, including replacement of expansion joints, which were approved by President Bola Tinubu.

The rehabilitation works have improved driving conditions and extended the bridge’s lifespan. The contract also includes a surveillance boat and two Hilux vans, which will be handed over to the police to support monitoring and rapid response. The minister expressed concern over excessive speeding and urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olufemi Dare, noted that the facility is the first of its kind on any bridge in Nigeria, allowing real-time monitoring of activities on the bridge and surrounding waters. The project features 240 solar panels, 10 inverters, a 300 kVA transformer, a standby generator, and multiple monitoring screens. The contract also covers 1,268 solar-powered street lights and a borehole facility. The project was awarded for ₦40.17 billion, with approximately ₦36 billion paid to the contractor so far.

The inauguration marks the first phase of the project, with additional commissioning planned once work on the bridge’s extension is completed. The launch of the CCTV control centre is a significant step towards enhancing security and improving road safety on the Third Mainland Bridge. With the new system in place, authorities aim to reduce incidents of reckless driving and prevent accidents, ultimately providing a safer environment for motorists and commuters. The project’s completion is expected to have a positive impact on the daily lives of Lagos residents and contribute to the overall development of the city’s infrastructure.
