The South-East region of Nigeria has faced significant challenges under the All Progressives Congress, according to Okwesilieze Nwodo, former governor of Enugu State. In a recent interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Nwodo stated that the region has suffered particularly during the eight years of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and the current presidency of Bola Tinubu.
Nwodo attributed the APC’s lack of acceptance in the South-East to the perception that the party targets the region for oppression. He noted that the Buhari administration’s policies were harsh on the region, and the situation has become even more difficult under President Tinubu. This perception has led to the alienation of the South-East from the ruling party, despite some regional leaders aligning with it.
The former governor explained that the APC has struggled to gain traction in the South-East since its formation, with many viewing it as a party that singles out the region for oppression. As a result, the people of the South-East have not been inclined to support the party, with Nwodo stating that regional leaders who associate with the APC do not represent the views of the general public.
The South-East region has historically been a stronghold of opposition parties, and the APC’s struggles in the region are not surprising. The region’s experiences under the Buhari and Tinubu administrations have likely contributed to the widespread perception of the APC as a party that does not prioritize the interests of the South-East.
