Rivers State Chairman Criticizes Governor’s Inaction on Budget and Assembly Provisions
The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Gift Worlu, has expressed concerns over the state’s budget and governance. According to Worlu, the former Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, did not allocate funds for the State House of Assembly in the budget he presented during his six-month tenure. This omission has created a challenge for the current administration, as Governor Sim Fubara has not taken steps to address the issue since his return from suspension.
Worlu’s comments come after Governor Fubara’s six-month suspension, during which President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency and appointed Ibas as the sole administrator. Ibas presented a budget to the National Assembly, as the state assembly was also suspended at the time. However, the budget did not include provisions for the assembly, which has resulted in a funding gap.
Worlu noted that it was expected that Governor Fubara would present a supplementary budget to cater to the needs of the assembly members and the Assembly Service Commission upon his return. Additionally, Fubara was expected to appoint commissioners to work with him and engage with party members who were willing to move forward. However, according to Worlu, the governor has not taken these steps and instead has been “playing to the gallery.”
The situation highlights the challenges faced by the Rivers State government following the period of suspension and the declaration of a state of emergency. The lack of provisions for the assembly in the budget has created a significant issue, and the governor’s inaction has raised concerns among stakeholders. As the state moves forward, it is essential for the government to address these challenges and work towards restoring stability and effective governance. The next steps for the governor and the assembly will be crucial in determining the direction of the state and its ability to move forward from this period of uncertainty.
