Portable faces assault and theft charges in court

Nigerian singer Habeed Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, on Monday to face a nine-count criminal charge. The charges, as outlined by Ogun State Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi, include assault, theft, causing harm, and resisting arrest.

The arraignment follows a viral video that surfaced on Sunday, showing Portable in police custody. According to reports, the singer’s estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, had filed a complaint against him. The prosecution alleges that Portable assaulted Ashabi, as well as several police officers and other individuals, at his bar in Iyana Ilogbo on New Year’s Day. Other alleged victims named in the case include Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi, and Ebuka Odah.

Portable is also accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300, valued at N12 million, belonging to Ileyemi and purchased from Wally Dex Auto. Two siblings of Ashabi Simple testified as witnesses to the alleged assault, although Ashabi herself was absent from the proceedings. Additionally, the police accused Portable of obstructing and assaulting Ogungbe Olayemi, a female police inspector, while she was performing her official duties.

The presiding judge denied Portable bail, citing the absence of the allegedly assaulted police officer in court. The judge emphasized that the officer’s presence is necessary before considering bail. As a result, Portable was remanded in custody, with a fresh bail hearing scheduled for January 19, 2026.

The case against Portable has drawn attention to the singer’s troubled past, which has been marked by controversy and run-ins with the law. The outcome of the trial is expected to have significant implications for the singer’s career and personal life. With the next hearing set for January 19, 2026, the case is likely to continue to generate interest and scrutiny in the coming months. The court’s decision to deny bail underscores the seriousness of the charges against Portable and highlights the need for a thorough and fair trial.
