Edo State Police Deploy Heavy Security After Violent Protest

Heavy Security Deployed in Ekpoma Following Violent Protest

The Edo State Police Command has deployed a significant number of security personnel to Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, after a protest turned violent, resulting in the arrest of 52 suspects. According to a statement by the Command, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, led the security operation, which involved coordinated efforts with other security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and local hunters.

The protest, which initially began peacefully, was allegedly hijacked by hoodlums who engaged in various criminal acts, including vandalism, assault, looting, and rioting. Investigations revealed that the suspects also forcibly invaded the palace of the Enogie of Ekpoma, His Royal Highness Anthony Ehizogie Abumere, and assaulted the traditional ruler and his wife. Parts of the palace were also maliciously destroyed.

The police have dismissed claims circulating on social media that peaceful protesters were arrested, emphasizing that only those suspected of engaging in criminal acts were detained. The Command stated that peaceful protesters were advised to return home and maintain calm, while the suspects were arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.

The deployment of heavy security personnel to Ekpoma is part of measures to restore calm and address rising concerns over kidnapping and other criminal activities in the area. The Edo State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to upholding citizens’ constitutional rights to lawful and peaceful protest, while maintaining zero tolerance for violence and criminality.

The police have urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports and rely solely on information from credible and official sources. With the situation in Ekpoma still unfolding, the Command has assured the public of its unwavering resolve to sustain peace and security across the state. The cooperation of law-abiding citizens has been appreciated, and the public can expect continued efforts to maintain law and order in the area.
