Africa Cup Nations Nigeria coach prepares for penalty shootout

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is nearing its climax, with Nigeria’s Super Eagles set to face Morocco in the semi-finals. As the teams prepare for the highly anticipated match, coach Eric Chelle has addressed the possibility of the game going to a penalty shoot-out.

So far, only one match at the tournament has been decided by spot-kicks, with Mali and Tunisia contesting the last-16 stage. Nigeria has recent experience with penalty shoot-outs, having lost to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoff in November.

When asked about his team’s preparations for a potential shoot-out, Chelle emphasized the importance of a positive mindset. He stated that if the match against Morocco extends beyond extra-time, he will rely on faith to guide his team to victory. “I will go to the mosque to pray to win if we get to a penalty shootout,” he said.

The Super Eagles are looking to advance to the final, where they would face either Senegal or Egypt on Sunday. A win against the host nation, whether in regulation time or via penalties, would be a significant achievement for the team. The African Cup of Nations has seen intense competition so far, and the semi-final match between Nigeria and Morocco promises to be an exciting encounter.

As the tournament progresses, fans from across the continent are eagerly anticipating the outcome of the semi-final matches. The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has already showcased the skills and determination of African football teams, and the remaining matches are expected to be closely contested. With the final scheduled for Sunday, the stage is set for a thrilling conclusion to the tournament. The Super Eagles’ performance against Morocco will be crucial in determining their chances of advancing to the final and potentially claiming the championship title.
