NJC clears Osun Chief Judge of misconduct allegations

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has cleared the Chief Judge of Osun State, Justice Oyebola Adepele Ojo, of allegations of financial recklessness, diversion of funds, and judicial misconduct. The council accepted the report of a three-member investigation committee that found no evidence to substantiate claims of misappropriation, abuse of office, or breach of the Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers.

The investigation was prompted by several petitions submitted by various individuals and groups, including the Osun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Jimi Bada, and the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun. Other petitioners included members of the Osun State Judicial Service Commission, judiciary staff, and individuals who alleged unilateral suspension of staff, selective promotion, and misappropriation of judiciary funds.

Specific allegations included the diversion of N7.4 million earmarked for judges’ and magistrates’ retreat, a N5 million robe allowance, and proceeds from e-affidavits. However, after hearing all parties and their witnesses, the investigation committee found that the suspension of judiciary staff followed due process and did not amount to misconduct. The committee also ruled that issues relating to staff promotion and training were within the statutory responsibilities of the Osun State Judicial Service Commission.

On the financial allegations, the committee found no evidence to show that Justice Ojo diverted or personally benefited from any of the funds referenced in the petitions. The NJC stated that all parties were afforded a fair hearing during the investigation process, with the committee sitting on several occasions to hear witnesses and review evidence.

The committee’s findings were based on a thorough examination of the evidence presented, and its recommendations were accepted in full by the NJC. The council’s decision reinforces the importance of due process and the rule of law in the administration of justice. The outcome of the investigation is significant, as it clears the Chief Judge of serious allegations and upholds the integrity of the judiciary in Osun State.

The NJC’s decision is also a testament to the council’s commitment to ensuring that the judiciary is free from corruption and misconduct. The council’s investigation process is designed to be fair, transparent, and thorough, with all parties given the opportunity to present their cases and respond to allegations. The outcome of this investigation demonstrates the effectiveness of this process in resolving disputes and upholding the integrity of the judiciary.
