Lagos 2027: Ambode’s Return

Lagos State’s 2027 general election is gaining momentum, with former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode re-emerging as a potential candidate. Party leaders are reportedly working to delay Seyi Tinubu’s governorship bid until 2031, citing the need for party continuity and strategic planning. Seyi, the son of President Bola Tinubu, has been touted as a potential contender by several youth and diaspora groups.

The contest is expected to be highly competitive, with several high-profile aspirants and emerging power blocs. The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), a powerful 30-member body established by President Tinubu, is playing a key role in shaping the party’s strategy. The GAC has been instrumental in the emergence of former governors, including Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode.

According to sources, the party leadership is considering Ambode to return and complete his second term, paving the way for Seyi Tinubu in 2031. This move is seen as a way to address the discontent among stakeholders in the Epe district, who feel that their native son, Ambode, was unfairly removed from office. The Epe district has been demanding that either Ambode or Tunji Alausa, the current Health Minister, should succeed the current Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.

The 2027 field is already crowded, with heavyweights such as Femi Gbajabiamila, Mudashiru Obasa, and Abdul-Azeez Adediran being touted for the number one seat. However, only Jandor, a former PDP aspirant who defected to the APC, has publicly declared his ambition for the governorship.

Residents and electorate across Lagos are watching the political maneuvering closely, with many expressing a mix of excitement, skepticism, and cautious optimism. They are demanding a leader who can bring development, improve infrastructure, and secure jobs. The next governor will need to have a vision that goes beyond political calculations and listens to the needs of ordinary people.

As the road to 2027 begins, the party must reconcile all interests while projecting a candidate capable of winning in a competitive general election. The outcome of the election will have significant implications for the state’s future, and Lagosians are watching closely. With the countdown to 2027 underway, the stage is set for a fiercely contested and closely watched election.
