Kwankwaso clarifies APC defection stance amid caution

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has clarified his stance on potentially joining the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking to party leaders and supporters at his Kano residence, Kwankwaso emphasized that his cautious approach stems from past experiences. He noted that his position has been misunderstood, stating that he did not reject the APC outright, but rather seeks assurances about the future of the Kano State Government before making a decision.

Kwankwaso’s concerns center on the fate of his lawmakers and supporters, should he decide to defect to the APC. He drew on previous instances where his camp played a significant role in forming governments, only to be sidelined later. The former Governor of Kano State stressed that any potential defection must be predicated on clear guarantees regarding the protection of his supporters and the state government’s structures.

Kwankwaso highlighted the lack of firm assurances to safeguard the interests of his supporters, known as Kwankwasiyya, or ensure their fair treatment within any new arrangement. He emphasized that abandoning the NNPP without written assurances would be premature and risky. The former governor reiterated his commitment to protecting the mandate and interests of his supporters, assuring them that no decision would be taken without broad consultations and clear benefits to the people.

Kwankwaso’s cautious approach reflects the complex landscape of Nigerian politics, where alliances and defections can significantly impact the balance of power. As the NNPP leader navigates this terrain, his emphasis on securing guarantees for his supporters underscores the importance of careful consideration and strategic planning in political decision-making. With the fate of his supporters and the Kano State Government hanging in the balance, Kwankwaso’s next steps will be closely watched by political observers and stakeholders in Nigeria.
