Mozambique Sovereign Wealth Fund grows to 116 million dollars

The Bank of Mozambique has announced that the country’s Sovereign Wealth Fund has recorded a market valuation of $116.4 million as of January 12. The fund, which is managed by the central bank, was established to maximize the benefits from revenues generated by the country’s natural resources, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG) production in the Rovuma Basin.

The initial capital of approximately $110 million was deposited into the fund on December 10, 2025. Since then, the fund has seen an increase of $6.5 million, with an average daily appreciation of $197,250.48. According to a report published on the central bank’s website, the fund’s portfolio is managed conservatively, with a focus on low-risk and high-liquidity instruments.

The revenue for the fund currently comes from LNG production in offshore areas one and four of the Rovuma Basin, located off the coast of the northern province of Cabo Delgado. However, other oil and gas projects are expected to contribute to the fund in the future. The central bank’s role in managing the fund is to ensure that the revenues generated by these natural resources are used to strengthen macro-economic and budgetary stability, while also creating a sustainable base for future savings and wealth accumulation.

As of January 9, 2026, the fund’s market value was recorded at $116,446,415.78, representing an increase of $6,473,870.06 compared to the initial capital. Over the next three days, the fund generated an additional $35,395.62. The central bank’s report highlights the fund’s investment strategy, which is designed to minimize risk while maximizing returns.

The establishment of the Sovereign Wealth Fund is a significant step for Mozambique, as it seeks to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on natural resources. The fund’s growth and development will be closely watched, as it has the potential to play a key role in the country’s economic development. With the fund’s assets expected to continue growing, it will be important to monitor its performance and ensure that it is being managed in a transparent and responsible manner.
