Dangote Refinery misses 50 million liters fuel supply target

Dangote Refinery Falls Short of Domestic Fuel Supply Target

The Dangote Refinery in Nigeria failed to meet its planned domestic supply of 50 million liters of fuel per day, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). The refinery supplied 32.01 million liters per day in December 2025, missing its target by 17.9 million liters per day.

Despite the shortfall, the refinery increased its supply by 64.4% compared to the previous month, from 19.47 million liters per day to 32.01 million liters per day. The total domestic supply of petrol in December rose to 74.2 million liters per day, up from 71.5 million liters per day in the previous month.

Nigeria’s total fuel consumption also increased to 63.7 million liters per day in December, a rise from 52.9 million liters per day, amid lower fuel prices. The Dangote Refinery, which is valued at $20 billion, had aimed to supply 50 million liters of fuel per day to the local market.

The NMDPRA’s data release comes as the Managing Director of Dangote Refinery, David Bird, recently claimed that the refinery had achieved a 50 million liters per day domestic fuel supply in December. However, the regulator’s figures indicate that the refinery fell short of this target.

The significance of the Dangote Refinery’s supply shortfall lies in its potential impact on Nigeria’s fuel market. As one of the country’s major fuel suppliers, the refinery’s inability to meet its target could lead to fuel shortages and price increases. The increase in total fuel consumption and domestic supply, however, suggests that other factors may be at play in the market.

The Dangote Refinery’s performance will be closely watched in the coming months as it continues to ramp up its production and supply to the local market. The Nigerian government and regulatory authorities will likely be monitoring the situation to ensure that the refinery meets its targets and helps to stabilize the country’s fuel market. With the refinery’s production and supply expected to continue to grow, it remains to be seen whether it will meet its target of 50 million liters per day in the near future.
