Ramaphosa orders inquiry into ignored Iran naval exercise withdrawal

South Africa’s Defence Minister, Angie Motshekga, has launched an investigation into why the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) failed to comply with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s orders to withdraw Iran from a multinational naval exercise in False Bay. The exercise, known as Exercise Will for Peace, took place this week despite the government’s decision to withdraw Iranian participation.

According to Minister Motshekga, President Ramaphosa’s instructions were clearly communicated to all parties involved. The board of inquiry will aim to establish whether the president’s instructions were misrepresented or ignored. The investigation comes after a week of silence from the Defence Minister and the SANDF regarding the Iranian warships’ continued participation in the exercise.

Government sources indicate that President Ramaphosa ordered the withdrawal due to concerns about the potential impact on relations with the United States, particularly during a sensitive period when the African Growth and Opportunity Act is being debated in Congress. Additionally, the Iranian government’s crackdown on protests was also a factor in the decision.

The controversy surrounding the exercise has raised questions about the communication and decision-making processes within the South African government and the SANDF. The investigation is expected to provide clarity on the events leading up to the exercise and the reasons behind the SANDF’s failure to comply with the president’s orders.

The Exercise Will for Peace is a multinational naval exercise aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region. The participation of Iranian warships had sparked concerns among some countries, given the current geopolitical tensions. The South African government’s decision to withdraw Iranian participation was seen as an attempt to maintain good relations with the international community, particularly the United States.

The investigation into the SANDF’s actions is ongoing, and the findings are expected to be made public in due course. The incident has highlighted the importance of clear communication and adherence to instructions within the government and the military. The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched, as it may have implications for the country’s foreign policy and relationships with other nations.
