Police warn motorists after officers injured in Benin City crash

The Edo State Police Command has issued a warning to motorists after an incident in Benin City left three officers injured. A driver crashed into a checkpoint, prompting the command to reiterate its stance on reckless driving.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, the command will no longer tolerate motorists speeding through police checkpoints. The statement emphasized that there is no justifiable reason for such actions, except to evade lawful checks or endanger the lives of officers on duty.

The incident occurred at Iyekogba Estate Gate, where a 19-year-old unlicensed driver, Nsikak Okon, allegedly drove against traffic, smashed through a barricade, and struck three policemen. The suspect lost control of the vehicle, crashing into several cars before being apprehended. The injured officers are receiving medical attention.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle, a black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV valued at N28 million, was unregistered and had been in use since May 2024. Items recovered from the suspect include a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid suspected to be diluted refnol.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, condemned the attack, stating that anyone who deliberately harms police officers on lawful duty will face consequences. The command reassured residents of its commitment to public safety, emphasizing its dedication to protecting citizens’ rights while ensuring lawful and professional policing across Edo State.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with officers as investigations continue. The incident highlights the need for motorists to exercise caution and respect for law enforcement personnel. The Edo State Police Command’s warning serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and respecting police checkpoints. The command’s efforts to ensure public safety and maintain order will continue, with a focus on preventing such incidents in the future.
