Lagos Markets Urged To Maintain Hygiene Environment

The Lagos State government has emphasized the importance of maintaining a hygienic environment in markets, particularly in fish markets where waste management is crucial. Ms Surah Animashaun, Chairman of Epe Local Government Area, recently visited Aiyetoro and Oluwo fish markets, urging traders to prioritize cleanliness and proper environmental sanitation. According to Animashaun, clean markets are vital to public health, as poor sanitation can lead to the outbreak of communicable diseases.

During her visit, Animashaun stressed the need for traders to dispose of refuse appropriately, avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste, and ensure regular cleaning of stalls and surroundings. She noted that environmental hygiene is a collective responsibility, requiring the involvement of everyone. The council chairman warned that the local government would enforce existing environmental laws, including sanctions against defaulters, to maintain a clean and healthy market environment.

To support the traders, the local government has committed to providing adequate waste disposal facilities and regular monitoring. Additionally, Animashaun urged traders to desist from selling by the roadside, citing the risk of accidents. Several motor accidents have occurred along the Aiyetoro market area, prompting the council to take measures to prevent further incidents.

The emphasis on market hygiene is part of the Lagos State government’s broader efforts to promote public health and safety. By maintaining clean markets, the government aims to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and create a healthier environment for both traders and consumers. As the local government continues to work with traders to improve market conditions, the community can expect to see positive changes in the coming months.

The Lagos State government’s commitment to environmental hygiene is a crucial step towards promoting public health and safety. By prioritizing cleanliness and proper waste management, the government can help prevent the spread of diseases and create a healthier environment for its citizens. As the council continues to work with traders and the community, it is likely that other markets in the state will also benefit from improved hygiene and sanitation practices.
