The Benue State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the Otukpo township road dualisation project, which is currently being handled by the Federal Ministry of Works. The project is slated for completion by June 2026.
Deputy Governor Dr. Sam Ode provided this assurance during a media briefing on January 16, 2026, following an inspection of the Phase Two segment of the Makurdi–Ninth Mile dual carriageway within Otukpo Local Government Area. Dr. Ode explained that the state government is actively supporting the federal government’s efforts by financing compensation along the Wurukum Roundabout–Orokam stretch, with over N4.6 billion committed to compensate affected persons and handle utility relocations.
The state government’s support has led to the reassignment of the contractor, China Harbour Engineering Company, to resume work on the Otukpo township portion. According to Dr. Ode, the Controller of Works has assured that the Otukpo axis will be delivered by June 2026. The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change will work directly with the Deputy Governor’s office to resolve outstanding issues, including the relocation of water pipelines and overhead power lines, which is expected to be completed within two weeks.
The Otukpo township road dualisation project is crucial for the Idoma community, which has faced significant difficulties due to years of neglect. Upon completion, the dualised road is expected to stimulate local commerce and ease transportation for residents and travellers. The construction firm’s Site Manager, Mr. Dong Hong Jie, noted that the relocation of pipelines and electric poles remains a significant challenge but assured that the work pace will increase, with construction activities intensifying in the coming weeks.
The project’s progress is a welcome development for the community, and the state government’s commitment to its completion is a positive step towards improving infrastructure in the region. With the expected completion date of June 2026, the project is on track to bring significant benefits to the local economy and residents.
