PDP Denies Mandatory N10,000 Contribution Claim

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has refuted claims that it is requesting its members to contribute N10,000 each to fund party activities, describing the allegations as false and misleading. In a press statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party disputed a publication by The Observer Times, which suggested that the PDP was soliciting funds from its members.

The PDP took issue with the headline of the article, stating that it did not accurately reflect the party’s position. While the body of the report correctly quoted remarks made during an interview, the headline was deemed sensational and misleading. The party noted that other reputable media outlets had reported the same interview without distorting the facts.

The controversy arose from comments made during an interview, in which the party was asked how it intended to fund its activities following recent defections by some governors. The PDP explained that it was advocating for a return to its long-standing belief in voluntary, grassroots-based funding. The party cited its history of relying on small contributions from members to fund its activities, as was the case in 1998.

The PDP clarified that the reference to N10,000 was purely illustrative, intended to demonstrate the potential strength of collective, voluntary support. The party emphasized that there was no fixed amount, no compulsory payment, and no obligation imposed on any member. The statement read, “For the avoidance of doubt, there is no fixed amount, no compulsory payment, and no obligation imposed on any member of the PDP.”

The PDP has urged its members and the general public to disregard the misleading report and continue to support the party in ways they consider appropriate. The party’s emphasis on voluntary funding is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its grassroots support and financial base. As the party navigates the current political landscape, its approach to funding will be closely watched by observers and stakeholders. With its commitment to transparency and member-driven funding, the PDP aims to reinforce its position as a major political force in the country.
