AFCON Senegal wins title beating Morocco

Senegal has won the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title for the second time in their history, defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 in extra time in the final. The decisive goal was scored by Pape Gueye in the 93rd minute, securing a historic victory for the Teranga Lions.

The match, played in Rabat, was closely contested, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. Morocco had a chance to win the game in regulation time when they were awarded a penalty, but Edward Mendy saved Brahim Diaz’s attempt, sending the game into extra time.

Senegal started the game strongly, controlling the tempo and creating clearer chances in the first half. Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, made several crucial saves, including a one-on-one stop to deny Iliman Ndiaye. The hosts’ best opportunity of the half came when Nayef Aguerd narrowly failed to connect with Abdessamad Ezzalzouli’s cross.

In the second half, Morocco emerged with renewed purpose, but couldn’t find their cutting edge in the final third. Senegal, dangerous on the counter, almost struck late in normal time, but Bounou produced another full-stretch save to keep the contest level.

The game went into extra time, and Senegal needed little time to strike. A turnover in midfield saw Sadio Mané cleverly back-heel the ball into the path of Idrissa Gana Gueye, who released Pape Gueye. The midfielder drove to the edge of the box before firing an unstoppable shot beyond Bounou.

Morocco pushed desperately for an equalizer, but Senegal held firm, defending with resilience and maturity to see out a historic victory. The win seals Senegal’s second AFCON title and affirms their place among the continent’s elite. The team had previously won the title in 2021.

The victory is a significant achievement for Senegal, who have established themselves as a major force in African football. The team’s success is a testament to their skill, determination, and teamwork. With this win, Senegal has cemented its position as one of the top teams in the continent, and they will look to build on this success in future tournaments.
