Yobe 2027 Governorship Race Intensifies

As the 2027 governorship election in Yobe State approaches, subtle yet intense political maneuvering is underway. With Governor Mai Mala Buni nearing the end of his final term, various stakeholders are positioning themselves for the upcoming transition. Although the election is still nearly a year away, behind-the-scenes negotiations and consultations are gaining momentum, particularly within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The APC has maintained control of Yobe since the return to democratic rule in 1999. Unlike some states where succession contests have become public and confrontational, Yobe’s political landscape is characterized by discreet and cautious engagement. Politicians, party stakeholders, and community leaders are engaging in private meetings and subtle positioning, avoiding premature public declarations that could be seen as disrespectful to party structures and traditional leadership.

Several individuals are believed to be interested in the governorship seat, including former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Senator Ibrahim Bomai, and Senator Musa Kulas. Other notable figures, such as Baba Wali, Lawan Geidam, and Abubakar Aliyu, have also been mentioned in succession discussions. However, none have formally declared their candidacy, reflecting the state’s political culture of waiting for clearer signals before making ambitions public.

Succession politics in Yobe are shaped by internal consultations, relationship-building, and subtle negotiations. Aspirants focus on building relationships within party structures, traditional institutions, and community leadership, rather than engaging in early public campaigns. The ability to manage relationships quietly and timing are crucial in determining an aspirant’s success.

The zoning debate is also gaining traction, with some stakeholders arguing that Yobe East has held power since 2009 and that it is time for rotation to ensure equity, fairness, and political balance. The next governor is expected to have experience, grassroots acceptance, and the ability to unite the party and the state.

Governor Buni’s stance on succession remains unclear, with sources close to the government indicating that he is focused on completing his tenure and maintaining party unity. The opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), are monitoring developments and considering possible strategies to capitalize on the APC’s internal dynamics.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, consultations and negotiations are ongoing across the state. Despite the outward calm, observers note that these discussions will ultimately shape the outcome of the 2027 governorship election. The contest is expected to be largely decided within the APC, but opposition parties are working on internal restructuring and mobilization at the grassroots level, potentially creating opportunities in the absence of an incumbent seeking re-election.
