Mozambique ex PM Luisa Diogo dies in Lisbon

Luisa Diogo, Mozambique’s first female Prime Minister, passed away in Lisbon on Friday, January 16, after a battle with illness. Born in 1958 in Tete, Diogo began her career in public service in 1980, joining the Ministry of Finance while still a student. She rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy Minister of Finance in 1994 and Minister of Planning and Finance in 2000.

Diogo’s most notable achievement came in 2004 when she was appointed Prime Minister, a position she held until 2010. As a member of the post-independence generation, she was a strong advocate for the Frelimo party’s ideals of development, integrity, and women’s empowerment. During her tenure, she resisted pressure from international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to adopt policies that could have led to the creation of a corrupt oligarchic state.

In 2014, Diogo attempted to become the Frelimo candidate for the presidential election, but was defeated in the second round of internal voting by Filipe Nyusi, who was then the defense minister. This setback led to her marginalization within the party, and she subsequently transitioned to the banking sector. In 2012, she had become the Chair of Barclays Bank-Mozambique, which later became ABSA.

Diogo’s legacy is significant, not only as a trailblazer for women in Mozambican politics but also as a champion of economic development and good governance. Her commitment to the principles of integrity and transparency has left a lasting impact on the country’s political landscape. As Mozambique continues to navigate the complexities of economic development and political reform, Diogo’s contributions will be remembered as a testament to the importance of strong leadership and vision. Her passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across the continent, celebrating her life and achievements as a dedicated public servant and a pioneer for women’s empowerment.
