Human rights complaints hit 3019 in Kano State

The National Human Rights Commission in Kano State has reported a significant number of complaints received in 2025, totaling 3,019 cases. According to Shehu Abdullahi, the NHRC State Coordinator, the commission addressed 2,276 of these complaints, while 743 remain ongoing. The majority of the cases involved issues such as child abandonment, domestic violence, and violations of the right to life, as well as cultural, economic, and social rights concerns.

Abdullahi noted that other prevalent cases included law enforcement abuses, sexual and gender-based violence, and neglect of parental responsibilities. The commission’s data collection exercise conducted in 2025 across various communities in the state revealed a substantial influx of migrants, with over 2,000 individuals from different countries and states, including asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

To address these concerns, the NHRC plans to continue raising awareness and conducting sensitization campaigns through media outlets, particularly in rural areas and among traditional rulers. The commission will also organize town hall meetings to promote security consciousness. Furthermore, Abdullahi emphasized the importance of collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Justice and other relevant agencies, to protect and promote human rights in the state.

The NHRC’s efforts are crucial in addressing the various human rights issues in Kano State, and the commission’s commitment to creating awareness and promoting security consciousness is a step towards ensuring the well-being of its citizens. The data collected during the exercise will likely inform the commission’s future strategies and interventions, aiming to mitigate the root causes of these issues and provide support to affected individuals. By working with stakeholders and engaging with local communities, the NHRC aims to make a positive impact on the human rights landscape in Kano State.
