Police Officer Kills Colleague in Port Harcourt Shooting Incident

A police officer has been taken into custody after allegedly shooting and killing a colleague in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. According to the command’s spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the incident occurred on January 18 at approximately 1:20 p.m. at the Next Cash and Carry Supermarket in the Trans Amadi area.

The deceased officer, attached to the 14 Police Mobile Force in Yola, was on joint guard duty with military personnel and another officer when the shooting took place. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect, Okus, who is attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force and was on special duty at Intels Logistics Company, opened fire on his colleagues, resulting in gunshot injuries to the head and neck. The injured officers were immediately rushed to the hospital, where one of them, Sani, later succumbed to his injuries.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the second officer, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. The suspect will face an orderly room trial to determine the motive behind the shooting and may be charged to court for prosecution if found culpable.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. He emphasized the importance of professionalism and discipline among officers handling firearms, advising them to prioritize the safety of colleagues and members of the public while on duty. The incident highlights the need for vigilance and responsible use of firearms among security personnel to prevent avoidable tragedies. As the investigation unfolds, the police command will likely take steps to address any underlying issues that may have contributed to the shooting.
