Congo Army Retakes Uvira City From M23 Rebels

The Congolese army has regained control of the city of Uvira in South Kivu, following the withdrawal of M23 rebels, who are backed by Rwanda. The M23 group had seized Uvira in early December, but announced on Thursday that it was placing the city under the responsibility of the international community. This move came after the rebels had supposedly withdrawn from the city last month, in response to a request from the United States.

However, residents reported that M23 police and military personnel remained in the city, despite the announcement. On Sunday, pro-Kinshasa Wazalendo forces entered the southern districts of Uvira, followed by Congolese special forces later in the day. The government announced the full recapture of the city on Monday, with residents cheering the arriving fighters as sporadic gunfire echoed through the city. However, the arrival of the forces was marred by looting of shops and homes, according to local sources.

The M23 rebels had positioned themselves in the hills above Uvira, according to South Kivu officials, who stated that the rebels were “pointing their weapons at the city”. The recapture of Uvira is a significant development in the region, which has been plagued by conflict and instability. The M23 group has been active in the area since 2012, and their activities have led to displacement and human rights abuses.

The situation in Uvira remains volatile, with residents concerned about the potential for further violence. The Congolese government has announced that it will work to restore order and stability in the city, and to provide assistance to those affected by the conflict. The international community has also been called upon to provide support and assistance to the region, in order to prevent further instability and humanitarian crises. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the recapture of Uvira will impact the broader conflict in the region.
