Anthony Joshua driver faces court over fatal crash charges

A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has resumed hearing the case against Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of a Lexus SUV involved in a fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two associates of boxer Anthony Joshua. Kayode, 46, faces a four-count charge, including dangerous driving causing death and reckless driving, following the accident on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The charges are contrary to provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. The court had granted Kayode bail in the sum of 5 million with two sureties. The accident resulted in the deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, close associates of Joshua, who sustained minor injuries in the incident. The boxer was later discharged from the hospital and continued his recovery at home.

The crash occurred when the Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck, leading to the deaths of Ayodele and Ghami. Joshua, accompanied by his mother, paid his last respects at a funeral home in Lagos before the bodies were repatriated to the United Kingdom. The two men were laid to rest after a funeral prayer at the London Central Mosque, followed by burial at Hendon Cemetery.

Their deaths drew widespread tributes from the global boxing community, particularly given their roles as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach and personal trainer, respectively. The case highlights the importance of road safety and responsible driving, especially on major highways like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The court’s decision will be closely watched, as it sets a precedent for similar cases in the future.

The hearing is ongoing, with the prosecution presenting its case against Kayode. The outcome will depend on the evidence presented and the court’s interpretation of the Federal Highway Act. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for caution and attention on the roads, especially for drivers of high-profile individuals like Anthony Joshua. As the case unfolds, it will be important to consider the broader implications for road safety and the responsibility of drivers to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
