Nigeria coach Chelle contract extension ruled out

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has clarified its position on the future of Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, amidst speculation over a potential contract extension. According to NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, discussions regarding a new deal for the Malian tactician are premature, as his current contract still has considerable time to run.

Chelle was appointed to lead the three-time African champions in January 2025 and has since made a notable impact, guiding the team to a Bronze medal finish after defeating Egypt. Despite this success, Gusau emphasized that the focus is on the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, tournament in Morocco, rather than contractual negotiations.

The NFF President explained that Chelle’s existing contract, which runs for two years, was only halfway through its term, making discussions about an extension unnecessary at present. “We signed a 2-year contract with him in January 2025 and he’s still only halfway through his contract,” Gusau stated, in an interview with sports journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.

The NFF’s stance is likely to be closely watched by football fans and analysts, given the Super Eagles’ recent performances under Chelle’s guidance. As the team prepares to face further challenges in the AFCON tournament, the federation’s decision to delay contract talks may be seen as a strategic move to maintain focus on the immediate goals ahead.

With the AFCON tournament still underway, the NFF’s priority appears to be on supporting the team’s quest for success, rather than engaging in contractual negotiations. As the Super Eagles continue their campaign in Morocco, the football community will be keenly observing the team’s progress, as well as any future developments regarding Chelle’s tenure as coach. For now, the NFF remains committed to its existing agreement with the coach, with any decisions on a potential extension to be reassessed at a later date.
