Tourism hits record 1.52 billion international arrivals in 2025

Global tourism reached a new high in 2025, with 1.52 billion international tourist arrivals recorded worldwide, driven by increases in Asia and Africa, according to the UN Tourism. This milestone was achieved despite high inflation in tourism services and uncertainty from geopolitical tensions. The secretary general of the Madrid-based body, Shaikha Alnuwais, noted that demand for travel remained high throughout 2025.

In Nigeria, the tourism sector is growing, with a focus on showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and unique attractions. Key areas of interest include Lagos for city life and beaches, the Jos Plateau for cooler climates, and historical sites like the Badagry Slave Route. The country is also home to natural wonders such as Zuma Rock, Olumo Rock, and Obudu Cattle Ranch, which offer opportunities for eco-tourism and adventure.

Nigeria’s tourism industry is highlighting its cultural and historical attractions, including the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, Nike Art Gallery, and Tafawa Balewa Square. The country is also developing its eco-tourism sector, with national parks, hiking trails, and wildlife viewing opportunities. Additionally, Nigeria’s coastal and marine tourism is expanding, with beach resorts and water sports facilities being developed.

The Nigerian government is focusing on leveraging the country’s cultural exports, such as Nollywood, music, and fashion, to promote tourism. The sector is expected to generate foreign exchange, create jobs, and promote national integration. Significant investment potential exists in developing heritage sites, eco-tourism, and infrastructure, such as lodges and cable systems.

As the global tourism industry continues to grow, Nigeria is well-positioned to benefit from its rich cultural and natural resources. With a growing focus on tourism development, the country is expected to attract more international visitors in the coming years. According to the UN Tourism, the global tourism industry is expected to continue growing, with increased tourism receipts and job creation. Nigeria’s tourism sector is poised to play a significant role in the country’s economic development, with projections for increased tourism receipts and job creation.
