Greenland dispute Trump seeks support from NATO chief

US President Donald Trump has shared a message purportedly from NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, in which Rutte praises Trump’s efforts in global hotspots and expresses commitment to finding a solution to the Greenland dispute. The message, posted on Trump’s social media account, comes ahead of the Davos World Economic Forum, where Trump plans to meet with world leaders to discuss the issue.

The Greenland dispute has been a point of contention between the US and its European NATO partners, with Trump seeking to assert control over the autonomous Danish territory, citing its strategic importance in defending against Russia and China. Denmark has maintained that Greenland’s status is non-negotiable, and several allies have sent small troop contingents to the territory to reinforce its sovereignty.

According to the message, Rutte commended Trump’s accomplishments in Syria, Gaza, and Ukraine, and expressed his intention to highlight these efforts during his media engagements at Davos. Rutte also stated that he is committed to finding a way forward on the Greenland issue. Trump had earlier announced that he had a “very good” phone call with Rutte regarding the matter.

The dispute over Greenland is expected to dominate the Davos gathering, with Denmark and its allies firmly opposed to any change in the territory’s status. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has dismissed Trump’s claims that Moscow or Beijing pose a threat to Greenland, stating that there is no evidence to support such assertions. Lavrov emphasized that Russia is interested in establishing “open, free” Arctic cooperation and is closely monitoring the situation.

The Greenland dispute has significant geopolitical implications, with potential consequences for the NATO alliance and regional stability. As the situation continues to unfold, international leaders will be watching closely to see how the issue is addressed at the Davos forum and beyond. With tensions running high, a resolution to the dispute remains uncertain, and the outcome is likely to have far-reaching consequences for global relations and security.
