Katsina Ex-Chief of Staff Defects to ADC

A former high-ranking official in Katsina State has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC). Almustapha Saulawa, who served as Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Aminu Masari, made the announcement at the ADC Secretariat in Katsina, where he formally registered as a party member. Saulawa was joined by a large group of supporters, primarily youths, in his decision to switch parties.

Saulawa, a founding figure of the APC in Katsina State, cited his desire to “rescue” the state as a key factor in his decision. He expressed his frustration with the APC, stating that years of loyalty had brought him to a breaking point. The former Chief of Staff criticized his former party, describing the ADC as a major threat to the APC’s dominance.

The defection is significant, as Saulawa played a crucial role in building the APC at both state and federal levels. His appointment as Chief of Staff under Masari was a culmination of his efforts. Saulawa’s move is not an isolated incident, as several high-profile individuals, including former Secretary to the State Government Mustapha Inuwa, Senator Ibrahim Tsauri, and Senator Baban Kaita, have also defected from the APC in recent times.

Saulawa’s immediate focus is on party building, and he has not yet decided whether he will contest any elections in 2027. He emphasized that his defection would not affect his personal relationship with the current governor, Dikko Umar Radda. The former Chief of Staff’s decision is seen as a potential game-changer in Katsina State’s political landscape, as it signals a growing coalition capable of challenging the APC’s long-standing dominance ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ADC is poised to benefit from Saulawa’s experience and influence, as the party seeks to expand its presence in the state. With several high-profile defectors on board, the ADC is increasingly seen as a viable alternative to the APC. As the 2027 elections approach, the political dynamics in Katsina State are likely to undergo significant changes, with the ADC emerging as a major player.
